NEW BTS stockist as of April 1st!

So as you may have heard we were recently cast on All on the Line… well let’s just say that the course of our episode may take some unexpected twists and turns, but a huge thing to come out of the exposure we’ve gotten since the show is a super cool collab with a HUGE HUGE store… yes, you might’ve already spotted the signature shade of traffic cone orange – Home Depot!!

We were a little surprised when they approached us, but then we thought, what better place to find customers looking to buy loungewear than where someone is already at picking up goods for their home! So we roll out in select Home Depot locations starting April 1st and they’re doing some really big promotion around the whole thing. Who knows maybe Joe Zee might even be doing some trunk show style events there with us if all of our PR people could just get on the same page!

I never thought when Josh and I sat down to our “board meetings” (aka with notepads and our two cats on our couch) and discussed going green that one day we’d be literally going to the green section of their store and discussing how we could integrate displays with their outdoor department. After countless hours discussing store movement patterns and strategizing with Home Depot’s team we have come up with a strategic plan of action that places hand picked BTS merchandise throughout the store. The Home Depot buyers were really gung-ho about sales training as well, so we’ve been spending lots of time in store talking about things like cleanliness etc, because no one wants the guy from the paint dept walking over to show you a pair of knickers and forgetting he’s got red paint on his hands- now THAT gives a whole new meaning to being caught red handed!

But I could go on and on about how excited we are at this huge opportunity, but I will just say a picture speaks louder than words, check out some of the action as BTS comes at you in HD this April!

I drove up to this home depot in Upland, CA where I used to go with my family and nearly flipped out! I can’t believe they’re going out of their way to promote us like this!

They had to add dressing rooms, adding signage to direct customers to the correct location. Imagine how many women won’t mind going shopping for lumber with their man now that they can shop for themselves here too?! it’s GENIUS! Check out the employee restocking a Playdate babydoll on the floor!

Going Green BTS in Garden dept in HD

Here’s the Head Buyer and an stock assistant folding our Come Out & Play bikini and boyshort to place in the Point of Sale displays that we strategically placed throughout the store. I like the idea of matching the merchandise with the surroundings, like these minty green undies next to the ACTUAL herb section where they sell real mint!

I really love how the colors of our collection play off the more industrial merchandise, who knew the softer side of Home Depot could look this good!

Now this is the part that is really going to blow your mind, they pulled out all the stops with their PR team and they got the most insanely perfect product placement for our Made in the USA brand… yes… yes… OBAMA!! Can you believe it?! I mean, for Barack to say that he will be all over Michelle in our Frolic and Play shorts… I nearly fainted! Again, a picture speaks louder than words:

Yeah, you might want to pre-order these while they last, because once you get the presidential SEAL of approval I am pretty sure that means we’re gonna sell out fast.

Arabesque, new luxe range coming soon…

Created in part for the new show starring elle magazine creative director Joe Zee called All on the Line, this new luxe range from Layla L’obatti for BTS is sure to turn heads and take the lingerie world by… sand storm? In her own words, designer Layla L’obatti reveals her inspiration behind the new collection:

I wanted to call upon my dueling cultural backgrounds with this latest collection, to play a subtle dance between eastern and western influences, and to tell a story of romance and intrigue that could cross borders and still read as timeless and exquisitely beautiful.

I was captivated by this lace with a lovely dancing black line in it that reminded me of the inside of a Persian palace I visited as a child. I continue to be inspired the drape, movement, and fluidity of silk and it just fits in with the luxury range, so from my western side I continued to delve into the idea of dance and one of the most difficult moves being arabesque, it hit me that this name would be the perfect marriage of the two concepts. Arabesque also happens to describe the types of designs depicting flora in middle eastern architecture. I kept these architectural details in mind with artful miters of lace mimicing the eaves of those palaces and iconic structures on that youthful trip to the middle east. I did branch out with the addition of stretch velvet details as well as a printed microfiber set which adds a totally new and different kind of texture to this collection.

This collection was designed in part for an upcoming reality show, so I can’t reveal all the details and images just yet. So stay tuned for more updates (and possibly a teaser video?) Our episode airs April 19th at 10pm on Sundance Channel and will be available on iTunes if you don’t receive Sundance.

Between the Sheets: our vision of sustainability

Here we go with Past 4 in my ongoing series on sustainable fashion and the connections between fashion and the environment.  For those of you just joining the conversation catch up on Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. When I’m not working on BTS with Layla I have a day job working as an environmental lawyer. This ongoing series of posts focuses on sustainability in fashion and why supporting fair wages and made in the USA fashion is so important.  These topics are near and dear to Layla and I and bring together my BTS and environmental lawyer worlds. Join in the conversation in the comments or make suggestions for future posts on sustainable manufacturing and fashion. Part 4: Between the Sheets: our vision of sustainability

It was announced recently that a group of major apparel companies, not for profits, and academic institutions have come together to form the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.  The goal of the coalition is to develop “a comprehensive database of the environmental impact of every manufacturer, component and process in apparel production, with the aim of using that information to eventually give every garment a sustainability score.” This sustainability score would give consumers a new way to evaluate the sustainability of their purchases and support companies who develop more sustainable garments.

 

Seeing the apparel industry as a whole grapple with the sustainability challenges posed by a large multi-faceted global supply chain and the trade-offs and sacrifices that have been made in the name of profit highlights the decisions that all companies must make to develop apparel for market.  These are the issues that I discussed in Part 1 of this series on the environmental cost of fast fashion and in Part 3 on the economic and labor issues that plague the apparel industry.

As a small nimble apparel business Between the Sheets has set out to make decisions that support the three pillars of sustainability: society, environment, and the economy. While we don’t have a “sustainability score” for our loungewear and lingerie lines we have given a tremendous amount of thought to the decisions that we’ve made to launch the line and our business.  We also have made a commitment to be transparent with our customers and give the reasoning and tradeoffs (if any) of the decisions we make every day.

Starting any business involves making hundreds, maybe thousands of decisions that all come together to shape a company’s vision, path, and direction.  To launch an apparel line involves even more  decisions as there are countless pieces of the puzzle that all must come together from the fabrics and trims that are used to the way that pieces are manufactured, to how product is sold, stored, and shipped. Each one of these decisions must be carefully considered as the future success and sustainability of the business depends on a cohesive and well thought out plan as well as making the right decisions along the way.

In making the thousands of decisions that all came together to launch Between the Sheets Layla and I didn’t set out explicitly with the goal of creating an “eco-friendly” brand or to market ourselves as green.  But from the outset we both had a passion for creating a business that would make beautiful and high quality loungewear and lingerie the right way, in the US where workers are protected by minimum wage laws and harsh sweatshop working conditions are illegal, and to make choices that do our part to protect the environment.  Along the way Layla chose many fabrics with inherently eco-friendly properties and decided to work with suppliers who are based in the US as much as possible.  This was done as part of a conscious effort to support our local economy, but had the added benefit of reducing lead times and saving shipping fees.

Layla and I both come from entrepreneurial families who have worked hard to build small businesses in the US.  We bring this passion to our model of local sustainably focused business. Manufacturing was once the largest economic engine in this country.  With so many industries moved overseas and the skills that once drove these industries disappearing it is more important than ever to support and rebuild local manufacturing businesses in a sustainable way.

In many ways we have passed through a technological revolution and find ourselves moving into an ecological one, in which the ethical and ecological ways in which we have grown are now being questioned.  So the answers for a sustainable tomorrow will not be found overseas, but right here, in our backyard, through sustainable manufacturing that supports the economy, our society, and the environment.
