Sunflowers as far as the eye can see! We recently took a trip to Sandyston NJ, home to the Sussex County Sunflower Maze.
Greeted by meandering paths of towering sunflowers of various sizes and colors, the maze is at its peak between the end of August and middle of September. I didnt take the time to count, but according to the farm there are more than 1 million sunflowers filling the fields creating lush and dense fields of yellow, red, orange, and burgundy.
The farm does allow dogs, if kept on leash, but paths can be crowded, narrow, and have children and strollers, during peak times, so if you have a nervous or reactive dog (like we do with Merlin), it is good to give other visitors extra space, or move through areas of the maze that are less crowded.
A visit to the farm was a perfect late-summer day trip. When we visited there were some limited refreshments for sale at the entrance, as well as cut flowers. Would recommend wearing sturdy shoes and bringing a water bottle, as it can get warm in the fields, and be a bit of a hike to get back to the entrance.
The season for sunflowers is short, and this maze quite popular, so expect crowds if you go on a weekend or holiday. Parking at the farm fills up easily, so expect to park along the shoulder of the road.
