Hudson Valley Home – Visiting a Pumpkin Farm in the Catskills

10.20.2019 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

Fall in the Hudson Valley is one of our favorite times of year. Brilliant fall colors as the leaves change, apple picking, and pumpkin farms for Halloween. The Hudson Valley is full of farm stands, but we often drive a little farther to the Catskills for dramatic pumpkin towers, artistic pumpkin displays and sculptures, and for fall hikes in the mountains. We aim to support local farmers instead of buying pumpkins from grocery or big box stores.

Taking a trip to the Catskills to visit a pumpkin patch has become a regular tradition, to bring back an assortment of pumpkins for decorating our home, and to stock up on butternut, acorn, and other squash to store and use during the winter.

A wedding scene is set with the figures created from pumpkins stacked on top of each other. The pumpkin "people" are dressed with veil, hat, tie, and other wedding attire. Wooden boards depict a structure meant to evoke a chapel. Farm building and rolling green meadow in background.

Dried corn husks and stalks are woven together to resemble a horse that is hitched to a farmer cart full of pumpkins. A "scarecrow" resembling a woman in a red dress and straw hat is set as though driving the cart.

Know Before you Go

Best selection can be found in September before the Halloween rush.

  • Most Pumpkin Farms in the Catskills are open from September through the beginning of November (although some farms not focused entirely on pumpkins may have other seasonal produce for sale and open at different times)
  • Seasonal weather or early frosts can impact the timing of the season

  • Some Catskill pumpkin farms have seen recent retirements, with the owners moving on to other things. We have shopped from farms in Hamden, NY in the past, but always good to check social media or farm websites before venturing out to check hours and operating status.

A scarecrow dressed in red apron, plaid vest, with hat stands next to a sign at exit of pumpkin farm with the words "thank you". Pumpkins and corn stalks at the base of the sign and next to the scarecrow. Trees, and short wooden fence, and faux gravestones make up the scene.

Most Difficult to Make – Meet the Maker Day 29

03.29.2019 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

In the post about design I talked about pattern making and the process of bringing a design to life. Perhaps the most detailed and difficult to make piece in our collections are the arabesque tap pants.

Meet the maker, most difficult to make. Image of lace.
meet the maker - most difficult to make

I hand cut the lace and match/mirror the pattern and scallops have to be cut at a precise point to create the miter on the final garment. After these are sewn on the silk behind is cut away, so when on the body this reveals the skin behind. (Because this hand cutting is so laborious it’s not a task I give to our contractor who sews the garment but one I handle directly)

That’s just the lace, these also have a tiny baby hem and stretch velvet waistband that needs to be attached so as not to pucker and with the right amount floating above the back cutout.

Arabesque tap pant.

So this particular piece, but also the entire silk range is challenging to make in that the materials require experience & skill needed to apply the lace and finish such delicate materials. The designing & patternmaking of this piece is also particularly challenging because it’s non-stretch and needs to be designed to fit over the hips but sit on top of them securely, so the stretch velvet waistband and cut out are part of how the design is both functional and aesthetic.
