Ask L – Wanna be a lingerie designer? Get schooled!

Layla L'obatti class of 2007 intimate apparel

FLASHBACK! me in 2006 presenting a garment I made while I was getting my BFA in intimate apparel. It took me 3 days to bead this corset… 3 long days.

Long hours lead to some crazy moments in the sewing lab… I remember days and NIGHTS like these.

I can’t explain the odd combination of excitement and exhaustion that goes along with pursuing a degree in fashion design. I look back on my days at FIT and I miss the many late night hours in the sewing lab, the 4 hour long classes, the aching fingers and back, and the many heavy bags of lace and underwires. Well, maybe not SO much! Those were some tough days, but I think anyone who has moved on from that experience to the corporate fashion world as I did will say that there is a nostalgia there. You don’t remember how rough it was as much as you remember the many delirous laughs and jokes with classmates as you feverishly sewed your term garments, or maybe the field trips to designer studios and showrooms, or the feeling of wonder at being in the center of it all in the middle of New York City, the fashion capital of the USA.

So often as a designer you will get questioned on aesthetic, market, fit, and most frustrating of all price. Trust me, you’ll want those hours in the lab behind you so you can confidently say: It is not easy to make a panty, have you ever sewed a 1/2 wide zig zag stitch within a 5/8″ elastic? That’s a 1/8 inch tolerance, that means you can only waver about 1/4 the width of a pencil, the thickness of a quarter, while an industrial machine is charging ahead… not so easy. Knowing this you can say: It takes highly specialized sewing skills in addition to the patterning and grading and sizing specialties of intimates in order to be able to produce these garments. And just because your thong is “yay” big does not mean it doesn’t require as much sewing work as a t-shirt. Your first taste of this will be during your presentation:

Take whatever you think school costs and DOUBLE it… fabric and supplies are expensive. The costs of learning your craft $$$, your experience as a lingerie design student = priceless!!

The final review is the day when the critic, and a group of professors choose which pieces they feel should be put into the final show. A nerve wracking moment because for a lot of students this is the payoff, because parents will often be sitting in the audience seeing the culmination of your work in a professional setting for the first time.

Just because the garments walking down that runway are smaller does not mean they are any less work. Don’t take my word for it! I discovered that FIT has also taken the amazing step of having students from each class blog about the semester leading up to their final presentations. Including some really great behind the scenes videos of what it takes to be a lingerie design student. Read more about this year’s intimate apparel class through the eyes of Amy, the student chosen to blog their journey: click here

Congrats to the class of 2011! I know we have yet to see what you can do, bright futures in fashion lie ahead.

behind the scenes – Lau

07.27.2009 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

I feel I need to introduce Lau, because she is one of the sweetest, alluring, and subtley sexy girls I have ever met. I mean, I don’t want you to think I have a crush but I like to think of her as my muse…the smile, the laugh, the head tilted to the side get stuck in my head. Those images of a smiling happy girl are what bubble up when I’m designing, so I have to thank her for keeping me positive! She writes a little about her experience modeling for the BTS fashion shows below, and really… she drew a crowd. I had friends fly out from California the last year asking *is Lau going to be there?!* they were there for the show, but the fact that she came back year after year made her an expectation! Thank you Lau for all the amazing photos, and you know I’m wishing you well in whatever dreams you wish to pursue be it modeling or designing!
xoxo
L

BTS girl: How did you find out about BTS?
Lau: One of Layla’s classmates asked if anyone would be interested in modeling for student designers for a lingerie fashion show. It was more about fun and adventure for me, but I winded up making some friends while doing it, and never stopped showing up for each years fittings to be apart of the show.

BTS girl: So how many years did you do the show?
Lau: I’ve done the show all three years that it had taken place, and now I’m modeling for the BTS line!

BTS girl: Any funny stories? Guys in the crowd, dressing room moments, awkward fittings or encounters with designers and other models?
Lau: Well, it’s funny; I didn’t realize the reaction I got from the crowd until I saw the pictures/ videos posted after the show. When I strutted down the catwalk I was in the zone, so I didn’t hear or see much. I kept my focus on the runway and the cameras at the end of the runway.

BTS girl: I would really love to hear from the guys in the front row!! If you were a fan of the show, please feel free to write us about a guest post!! haha guy on the right is seriously enjoying this! Look at him bite his lip!!

BTS girl:Why lingerie? Are you extroverted/introverted?
Lau: Well I love lingerie when it comes to the fun, creative, and extraordinary get ups these designers came up with. It was similar to dress up, but for grown ups! Who really gets to wear stuff like this often? I really come out of my shell in these shows. I don’t do this on the regular, but I do find it liberating.

BTS girl: Did you get nervous before the shows? Tell us about your prep ritual, if you had one!
Lau: I got nervous before one show when a designer said she wanted to use me but I didn’t know what the design was going to look like, or how it was going to fit. Sure enough (just as I worried), she showed up with the smallest itty-bitty thong and a sheer train. It was so tiny, that the only way I could describe it was border line floss (that goes for the front as well) but luckily someone’s mom helping out back stage, had a stash of nude thongs to wear under the garments. I don’t know that woman’s name but she saved me from exposing a little too much in the front! Although I know I signed up for a lingerie show- I did want to remain tasteful.

As far as Prep ritual- I usually buy all the products I need for the show. We had a lot of hair dressers but I knew exactly how I wanted my hair so I did it myself.

BTS girl: Are you still modeling lingerie? What have you been up to since we saw you at the show?
Lau: I have been a part of the BTS line, which was great to do and I hope I can continue to be a part of it! Also a shoot for FreshPair.comfor their Bra Fit Finder.

BTS girl: Is modeling your dream job, if not what’s your passion?
Lau: When I was a little girl, I thought it would be fabulous to be a model, but my parents taught me that education is important and comes first. I agreed to get my degree first than pursue other things if I still desired to. Sure enough- post graduation, modeling kind of just happened for me- but I’m still keeping to my job search for design.

BTS girl: How do you keep yourself in such great shape?
Lau: I try my best to eat healthy but I love a lot of things that aren’t good for me (fried food) so when I know a shoot could be in the works, I hit the gym more than usual and keep a strict diet. Try my best to not eat past 8 pm because I’m a late night snacker and that’s one of the worst things you can do when trying to loose weight.

BTS girl:Is beauty skin deep?
Lau: Beauty is one of those words that can be defined in a million different ways. I believe that beauty is skin deep when it comes to adoration for a person as a whole.

BTS girl: How are your puppies doing? Do you have photos of them you can share with us?
Lau: How thoughtful of you to ask! Clarence and Toby are doing great! They are the definition of opposites attract. They both bring me so much happiness.

Clarence & Toby napping. adorable.Toby also made his debut with Lau in our first shoot for Between the Sheets Collection below!

BTS girl: Random Question of the Day: Ok we already asked you what you wear Between the Sheets for the video, soOo what do you like to eat Between the Sheets? What do you get a craving for right before bed?
Lau: Oh geez I just mentioned how horrible I am when it comes to late night snacks! You know I will just about eat whatever I can find in the cabinets and the refrigerator! Ha ha.
And if I don’t have anything to eat- I go on delivery.com and order away! My favorite- I love eating cheese fries (mozzarella cheese) with gravy for dipping- which is something I started eating from going to Ski/Snowboarding in Canada. It was an appetizer they had at the bottom of the ski lift. I’ll eat that, and French Onion soup!

Between the Sheets I wear…

07.12.2009 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

We asked the ladies and gents behind the scenes what they wear Between the Sheets! After all we’re starting a line of lingerie and loungewear. We must know!!

Well, if you trust what everyone here says (these are lingerie designers saying they don’t wear anything to bed!?) we may be in trouble! Well, we’re heartened by the girls who said cami’s and shorts because we’ve got those! I’m sure we’ve even got some items they didn’t think of!

So here goes the final video from our 2007 show, some credits, and make sure you check the tally as well!
