DIY – Shed Curtains

08.13.2023 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

To create curtains I wanted something that looked a bit like grain sacks, but that matched the shed, I went with this simple stripe using spray paint in a similar green to the shed floor/details. I masked off the sides with cardboard and the stripes with painters tape.

Sewing

I added hems/channels for dowels in the top and bottom of the burlap, and stitched velvet ribbon into the seams at the top for hooks to hang it and long ribbon to loop and tie the curtains up

Installing

I added two hooks to each window opening at same space as the loops I sewed on the curtains as a simple low tech solution for hanging them. If shade is needed they can be opened but I have been keeping them like this so I can see the garden bed on the other side of the window.

DIY – Shed Loft and Wall Storage

06.03.2023 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

Shed wall storage

To create the shed wall storage I used 1” dowels and spare 2×4 for this project. First thing I did was lay out tools to decide spacing, then marked and drilled/tested fit before drilling all the dowel holes. Placed and glued dowels and then hung it with the framing nailer.

Tools needed

  • Drill bit sized to dowels
  • Saw to cut dowels (or miter saw)
  • Wood glue
  • Framing Nailer or appropriate screws to hang it
2X4 is set on ground with garden tools laid out across to determine storage spacing.

Wooden 2X4 is resting on wooden bench. Holes are drilled in the wood for the dowel pegs. A drill, clamp, and measuring tape are on the table

Finished storage is tested on the floor of the garage with various garden tools inserted between dowel "pegs"
DIY wall storage is nailed into the studs in the wall. A wooden cart with green top is in the foreground.
Tools are hung in the wall storage. The shed has a variety of garden tools, storage containers, and furniture.

Loft space

From living in tiny NYC apts you learn the value of vertical space when organizing. So taking advantage of the upper part of this shed made sense. Even with the loft in there is room to walk under it comfortably. We used several 2×4’s screwed into framing and OSB sheathing for the loft.

in the garden – bluestone garden path and patio reveal

10.09.2022 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

Through the Seasons

Like every garden feature that stays fixed the views evolve and shift as we pass from season to season. This meandering bluestone path has brought so much beauty to our landscape, both functional and beautiful. Since the stones retain heat they often remain snow free during a light snowfall and look absolutely stunning in late fall an early spring. In summer the lush green grass emerges from between them. What a joy to watch a fixed path on a journey through time.

Lines of Sight

A path invites you to explore and the turns of the path draw your eye and movement through a garden. Ours leads from the potager to the cut flower garden and back to the front, with destinations and focal points like the picnic table guiding you to experience the garden.

The Texture

A path of stone and grass is very different than a gravel or mulched walkway. These aren’t meant to be a perfectly level smooth path, we have a new build home so adding things that feel like they are old gives the property character and timelessness.

Bluestone path curves around the base of the back deck, wrapping around the house towards the bluestone patio.
Daffodils in a garden bed sit next to the bluestone path. View is from overhead.

When the path ignites a soul,
there’s no remaining in place.

The foot touches ground,
but not for long.
