Danielle and I first met at the very first BTS fashion show casting in 2005, when I was just sophomore at FIT. Since then I’ve seen her career blossom in front of the lens with her face gracing notable campaigns for designers like Rachel Roy, but one thing I learned behind the scenes and after the BTS show was that Danielle had an amazing voice. We worked together styling indie singer and NYC artist Nicola’s latest album cover and promotional shoot. Post-shoot Danielle graced us with an a capella tune that gave me goosebumps, and that was when I first learned about the talent that didn’t meet the eye.
Fast forward to today, Between the Sheets “the brand/collection” is now two years young and Danielle is as beautiful as ever and pursuing that passion with that dreamy voice & Lexelle Music. I’m so glad we finally got to work together again, and I’m thrilled she was willing to answer a few questions for us here! Read on to find out her personal beauty must haves, musical inspirations, and an insiders perspective on the similarities/differences between the modeling and music industries.
a sneak peek of one of the shots of our FW12 collection with Danielle!
L: Model or singer, which do you prefer and why?
D: I prefer singing, because my dream and ultimate goal is to be a pop music and cultural icon. Singing and performing, was something I always aspired to do and what I was always passionate about. Modeling is a lot of fun, but not something I ever sought out as my career.
L: Musical inspirations, who’s on heavy rotation on your playlist?
D: Garbage, Goldfrapp, Queen, David Bowie, New Order, Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, Robyn, Prince
L: What do you think makes a woman in lingerie beautiful?
D: High quality lingerie is cut very accurately around the female form. That being said, all of our best parts are showcased at their best in great lingerie, expressing our natural beauty, and a vulnerability that is hidden behind everyday streetwear and accessories.
L: If you could change one thing about the modeling or music industry, or both what would it be?
D: If I were in charge of what is considered cool about the music industry, I would not not develop such young talent into superstardom so quickly, therefore age-especially for women wouldn’t be such an issue. Children/young people deserve their youth, and as talented as some of these young acts coming out may be, they lack the substance that the older performers with a bit more life experience bring to a performance.
The same can be said about modeling. I understand why models are discovered at a young age as it allows the time to develop their look, ultimately lengthening their careers. However, models used in advertising are meant to sell a product to a specific market. The model being beautiful and youthful gives the person viewing the ad an illusion of something to aspire to making them want to buy the product. Beauty and age of course sell, and where the viewer aspires to that, a more age appropriate model gives the viewer something to relate to as well.
L: What’s your favorite way to wind down after a long week?
D: I love going to the beach in the summertime, I do that almost every day that I have off. In the winter I am more of a homebody and spend a lot of time checking out new music and performing styles, I cook at home a lot and read a lot.
L: Favorite beauty or hair products?
D: I have been using the same Clinique face moisturizer since I was fifteen, I love philosophy’s lip glosses, and I am very into Urban Decay’s NAKED box, which has a slew of shades of gold based colors ranging from charcoal to nude. I also wear a lot of bright lipstick and am always on the look out for cool colors.
L: If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be?
D: Any exotic place that I have never been that allows immediate access to the ocean. I do have a preference for South America and Europe, but I’d go anywhere new.
