love – Borrowed & Blue Bride handmade bridal accessories

11.30.2010 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

One of the most amazing things about being a designer is being able to truly appreciate all the beauty that I see being created everyday… think of clothing & accessories as wearable works of art and their designers & manufacturers as modern day Degas of the body… after all isn’t that what Vionnet and Schiaparelli elevated fashion to with artful draping handled with a skill that could rival even the greatest sculptors in marble and bronze… so it is a little bit of a realization of a dream for me to be able to support the friends and designers I know and love, like my friend Heather from Borrowed and Blue Bride. We rushed through FIT [the Fashion Institute of Technology] like we were on a mission, towards these dreams of big design careers and then we left and found this humble and beautiful calling to start a career and rebuild our economy one slip, and one veil at a time. I think there is nothing more lovely than that.

I had the pleasure of introducing Heather’s gorgeous bridal accessories with our Specimens of Seduction lookbook a while back, and lets just say it was love at first sight! She makes the most exquisite feather corsage/hair ties, and the most elegant veils that cocoon you in romance. I cannot think of any day more special than your wedding day, and I am so happy to bring Heather’s pieces to our fans, and I hope when that special day approaches for you, that you think of something from Borrowed & Blue.

L: When did you start Borrowed & Blue?
Heather: My fiancé, DJ and I started Borrowed and Blue a little over a year ago in October 2009.  We started on Etsy an online marketplace for handmade and vintage crafts, art, collectibles and fashion pieces.  A few months later we added two Seattle bridal boutiques to our list of stockists and now BTS!  We are a growing business and look forward to what the future has in store for us.

L: What did you study in school- and what made you want to design bridal accessories and gowns?
Heather: I got my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from The Fashion Institute of Technology.  I always loved evening wear and bridal, so when it came time to choose a specialization I knew it had to be Evening Wear. While in the evening specialization program at FIT,  I had the opportunity to intern with The Jenny Yoo Collection.  Jenny Yoo is a very talented designer known for her elegant bridesmaid dresses.  I interned for her for ten months and tried to soak in as much knowledge of the bridal market as possible.  I loved bridal before but working with Jenny solidified what I wanted to do.  After graduation I moved back home and worked in several bridal boutiques.  At one of them I worked side by side the owner crafting custom wedding gowns and accessories.  From her I learned countless tricks of the trade and how to make veils.  Shortly after I found out about Etsy and started the Borrowed and Blue Shop.L: What is your philosophy on bridal – is less more or the more the better?
Heather: Less is more.  I think the dress the accessories and the veil should complement the bride rather than be only thing you notice.  From my experience working with brides they want to feel beautiful, elegant and be radiant but still be comfortable and able to exude their own personality.  I tend to lean more to the side of simple elegance because a bride can move and feel natural in addition to looking her absolute best.L: Has being engaged given you a new perspective on the wedding experience? (congratulations!!!)
Heather: Yes!  I always thought a lot about weddings and dresses because we are in the business but now I get to think about what I want to do for our wedding.  It’s very exciting! Our engagement is going to be on the longer side as we are getting married summer 2012.  We haven’t gotten too many details squared away yet but we are both very excited and are constantly brainstorming ideas.  I know wedding planning is a lot of work as we get closer and closer we will learn how much work it truly is.

L: What can we expect from Borrowed and Blue as you grow – anything you’re working on you can share with us?
Heather: You can expect beautiful timeless bridal accessories and possibly ( I hope) wedding gowns.  We are always working on new designs and brainstorming on ways we can be better as we grow.   I’d love to do dresses in the future but for now our focus in on making great high quality accessories.

L: How has starting your own business challenged you and your relationship? -I know I’ve personally experienced this as well 🙂
Heather: It’s a challenge to find the time to get everything you need and want to do done.  I often want days to last so much longer than they do.  It’s also a challenge to live with , work with and be engaged to your business partner.  You have to learn how to argue and compromise, delegate and let go.  There are lots of challenges but the rewards are great too.  DJ and I aren’t just making veils we are building a company a brand and a future.  We are very proud of each other and know we couldn’t go it alone.  I value his input and the skills he brings to the table as he does mine.  I think it’s key to identify what each person does best and let them take charge of that aspect.  DJ is the business and logistics side, I’m the creative one together we make a great team.

L: Do you have a favorite part of a wedding? ie. cake, the dress, flowers, the vows?
Heather: Of course I love the dress, accessories and veil!  I always try to get the best view of the bride walking down the aisle as possible.  But I love seeing the expression on the grooms face as she comes closer.  Usually their eyes are getting a little teary.  I think the grooms expression is such a telling part of their relationship and it makes the wedding so much more personal.

We’ll be counting rose petals waiting to see more from Heather soon, and you know whatever she is romancing up it will be fabulous! Check out more of Borrowed and Blue on etsy: click here

Fast Fashion is like fast food

11.28.2010 by btslingerie // 5 Comments

Hey everyone. Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and the new series of posts I’m working on for the BTS Blog. When I’m not working on BTS with Layla I have a day job working as an environmental lawyer. In an ongoing series posts I’m going to talk about sustainability in fashion and why supporting fair wages and made in the USA fashion is so important.  These topics are near and dear to Layla and I and bring together my BTS and environmental lawyer worlds. Join in the conversation in the comments or make suggestions for future posts on sustainable manufacturing and fashion. Hope you enjoy!

Josh

Part 1: Fast Fashion is like fast food—it may be easy to consume, but it tends to leave a bad taste in your mouth.

It may surprise you, but when I’m not busy helping to share beautiful lingerie and loungewear with all of BTS’s fans I am an environmental lawyer working to protect New York’s waterways.  When Layla and I embarked on this journey to launch Between the Sheets I wouldn’t have imagined that my work as an environmental lawyer and a lingerie entrepreneur could be so intertwined. I consider myself to be fairly savvy when it comes to environmental issues, but I was shocked to learn recently that the global textile industry is one of the biggest polluters of our precious waterways around the world. When you think of environmental impact you are far more likely to think of oil giants such as BP or Exxon or maybe dirty coal power plants or the mining industry.  In fact if you look at China and other countries where much of the throw away clothing that sits on racks at big chain stores comes from, the textile industry, which is the lifeblood of apparel manufacturing, is one of the worst polluters.

If you’ve seen the Movie Supersize Me, where Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonalds for 30 days and saw his health plummet rapidly, you’ve seen the horrifying health effects of a constant diet of fast food.  Fast fashion, is easily consumed, cheap, and abundantly available, and has similar impacts to the areas of the planet where cheap throwaway apparel is born. In China coal fired boilers belch thick black smoke, heating dye bathes where fabric is dyed.  These dyes and other harsh chemicals used in the finishing and treating of fabrics make their way into the rivers and pollute water, ground, and air.   A recent CNN news story explored the impacts of the denim industry in China and in September 2010 pollution concerns triggered a shutdown by the Chinese government of half of the textile dye houses in the Eastern textile hub of Zhejiang.

Fast fashion is a global business with design done in one country, raw materials sourced from all over the globe, and manufacturing done in the countries with the cheapest labor.  The spreading global network of supply and manufacturing may be cheaper, but the green house gases of transportation and lax environmental oversight in many countries make this global model of production environmentally costly.

Like a gourmet meal prepared from local organic ingredients, Between the Sheets and others who have made a commitment to manufacturing in the United States and sourcing environmentally friendly and sustainable materials go about making clothing from a very different perspective. Between the Sheets sources our materials from US and European suppliers where strict environmental laws protect what can be released into our waters and air, ensuring that the impact is minimized and our environment is protected. Souring materials and manufacturing closer to home also reduces the impact of transporting raw goods and components and spreading manufacturing all over the world.

Most people don’t eat gourmet food all the time and by the same token often find themselves buying fast fashion that has been made overseas.  Thanks to the efforts of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Clinton Global Initiative and some of the largest buyers of imported fast fashion (H&M, Walmart, and others) efforts are being undertaken to make the global apparel industry greener and to create clothing that is “Clean by Design.”

After studying factories in China NRDC released a list of 10 things that factories could do to reduce their impact on the environment.  With minimal investment and changes to operations factories were able to reduce their energy use, the amount of dye and other chemicals dumped into the environment, and save money too. So far pilot projects in China have shown an enormous improvement and a new pilot at a textile mill in Bangladesh is planned. Over the coming years more companies must make the commitment to do all they can to green their operations, saving the planet, and saving money through greater efficiency.

We encourage everyone to do their part. Buy Made in the USA clothing (and lingerie of course!) and eat local food when you can.  When you just need that fast food burger or that fast fashion top or pair of pants—go ahead and indulge, but consider writing to Forever 21, Target, or Victoria’s Secret and encourage them to participate in NRDC’s Clean by Design initiative—so we can all do our part to protect the planet.

Gift Guide – Holiday 2010 picks from Josh aka BTS guy

11.18.2010 by btslingerie // Leave a Comment

I truly love that my man is an unofficial/official lingerie connoisseur. Heaven forbid should something happen to our relationship he’d be able to woo any woman with his impeccable taste, but gladly he’s all mine! Perhaps we should start a course on fashion education just for the fellas, because it certainly helps to know these things. I can’t explain just how much he knows, or what a wonderful partner he is through the highs and the lows of starting a business… but look for some of his posts coming up very soon! He’s a Environmental lawyer by day, and I like to joke the King of Lingerie by night ;), and yes, you guessed it, that would make me the Queen!

So a voyeuristic moment let’s see a man’s take on what gifts are appropriate for the ladies in his life, and also what he wishes we’d make for him if we made menswear! (I know I almost spurted coffee out my nose reading that last one!)

Gift Guide by Josh

My Brother’s Girlfriend
– Well Played Yoga Pant in ChampagneBrother and girlfriend “S” live in sunny California. She works long hours and commutes across town. The Well Played Yoga Pant in Champagne would be perfect for relaxing or exercising to blow off steam and the color would match with their Chihuahua’s outfit if S and Brother decide to go for a jog on the beach.

My Mom
– Playdate Robe in Shade

Mom has been a huge BTS fan since day one and was actually the first customer when our web-boutique launched! She prizes comfort above all else, so finding a comfortable, yet stylish gift for her shouldn’t be too hard-with so much to choose from. She loved the Play Both Sides tank she bought last season so for Holidays a Playdate Robe in Shade will keep her comfy when she bundles up on the couch to read or knit.

My girlfriend (Layla) – Sheer Romance Robe in peach

What to get for the girl who has it all…and designed it all? Well Played Cardigans and Come out and Play Camis are frequent staples of her “around the house” wardrobe, but for Holidays I want to get her something that will take her breathe away when she unwraps the box…and take my breath away when she wears it. The Sheer Romance Robe in peach is elegant and beautiful (just like her) and would make a luxurious gift for my BTS Girl.

For Me – Well Played Lounge Pant in Navy

Between the Sheets doesn’t have a men’s line…yet, but with all the time I spend with incredibly soft loungewear all over the home office/apartment I couldn’t let my holiday gift guide go by without picking something that I would get for myself….if it would fit my 6 foot 3” frame. I would get myself the Well Played Lounge Pant in Navy-if only they would fit, I’m sure they would become my favorite PJs
