Product Range – Meet the Maker Day 8

Between the Sheets Product Range

From pyjamas to loungewear, everyday intimates to more hand finished heirloom pieces, I design and produce both machine washable and practical items to more fragile hand-wash specialty items. I have kind of dabbled in it all and that doesn’t even include previous collections. I enjoy the design process because there is such a huge range but that has to be balanced with what sells. Some of our best sellers shown here.

To add to this post further than what I was able to discuss on insta I’d like to talk about something that has come up on and off over the years – size range. As a small brand expanding sizing is a lot more complicated than it seems at the surface. Later in the meet the maker month I talked about the design process and how things are made – and we discussed grading and marking. One of the things that plays into pricing and size range for us as an indie is this step in the production process – it costs money to add additional sizes in every step of the process and all of that plus pre-making & holding additional inventory is an added burden on a small designer. I am always supporting fellow brands and I know there are others whose lines begin where ours end and I will point customers who are sized out of our line in their direction. Of course I want to see our brand expand in both scope of what we make and that includes sizing, but that has to be balanced with sales and not just items marked down but items at full price. That’s a conversation I’ve had with other brands and the Lingerie Addict on twitter many times.

I hope this gives an idea of why, at least for our brand it has been easier to expand our product range than our size range. I’m hoping that will change as we become more vertically integrated (which the market is forcing us to be, but that’s a topic for a future post).

Less Glam Side -Meet the Maker Day 7

The less glam side of working in fashion

Turning something you love into your career or business means becoming intimately aware of its dark sides. I think what people assume about me when I say I have my own line vs who I actually am rarely matches up. Maybe they think fashion is 24/7 meeting models, editors, and playing with fabric – but inevitably when I talk about the deeper reasons I started my own line – alluding to racism, nepotism, and sexism in the workplace or environmental and ethical questions I had that made me leave, well I am often left feeling isolated and like a real downer. I will admit when I was in wholesale the pressure got to me, I didn’t feel human and felt the need to “appear glamorous”, it was emotionally isolating. So I drifted away from friends who saw press articles as hallmarks of success and deftly avoided conversations about debt or mental health.

I am self financed which means I had a small savings, a loan from family to secure a bank loan (both since paid back) and an amount of credit card debt my husband and I are almost done paying off now after many years of wondering how we’d make it.

Everybody wants to be there for the champagne but no one really wants to know how you’re paying for it.

Part of me is scared to say that… but part of me is relieved to get it off my chest & let every aspiring designer know the potential personal toll doing this might take on you.

If you’re lucky to have credit and you choose to use it you might struggle. If you’re lucky enough to get backers you might have a very limited time to succeed & make their money back (few do) before they close your doors. If you’re lucky & get into a major store they might not pay after 90 day (typical terms are you ship before getting paid) who will pay your bills? I’m lucky to be where I am today, embracing the slow track, struggling to find my self worth outside my ability to produce.

Full Time or Part Time – Meet the Maker Day 6

Between the Sheets Basic Play Bralette

Shift your focus and many things become clear.

Full time! I’ve been consciously taking time to enjoy our new home and my independence, bc I wasn’t always good about work/life balance. I realized it didn’t make sense to be an entrepreneur if was my own worst boss.

When I became an entrepreneur wearing a million hats it felt like everything was on my shoulders, and for a time I moved forward on sheer force of will. I was the maker of all decisions I was closer to my passion but also the new to me challenges of sales, marketing, customer service, web design, and financing… in meeting the demands of my not so favorite things I lost sight of the reasons I started this. So now I’m taking time to garden and paint and be with my pets, making space for under the surface growth the way trees do in winter. I might not be producing collections but under the surface the space I gave myself has produced a new person who I would never have become if I hadn’t made space to process my almost decade out of corporate design.
